The bedroom is your sanctuary. People spend the majority of their time in their bedrooms. Naturally, the color of your bedroom walls is going to be the first thing your eyes see when you wake up each morning and the last thing you see before you go to sleep. So, picking a color for your new master suite addition is quite an important decision. Below we've listed a few things to consider when deciding on your master suite paint color. Keep in mind that there are exceptions to every rule and at the end of the day, you should choose a color that makes you feel at home in your master suite. Take a look at the pros and cons of choosing dark, trendy, and white paint colors for your master suite addition walls.
Darker colors create darker rooms. This can be seen as a pro or a con, depending on what you’re going for. If you’re concerned about the amount of natural light that comes through in the morning, or you just love the room to be as dark as possible then a dark color might suit you well. However, there are plenty of things you can do to keep the natural light out when you’re trying to sleep. Adding blackout curtains can cover the light from a pesky street lamp, or when the morning sun rises a bit too early for your liking.
Natural light fills a room and makes everything pop. Allowing natural light to play off of a color that complements it is important. Many people start their day with a big stretch, open the curtains and let the sunlight pour in.
It all comes down to personal preference. There are pros and cons to both dark and light colors for your bedroom. It’s up to you to decide what best suits your style. If natural light and a room that feels larger are important to you then a lighter color is a great choice. If you rarely open your curtains and love to sleep in, then a darker color will help you create a cozy environment, like this example below (not one of our projects).
Last, but certainly not least, the psychology of your color choice matters. For example, relaxing colors such as shades of blue, green or lavender can promote a more calming atmosphere in rooms where you plan to unwind. Science also supports certain colors having different impacts on a room. If you’re going for a lighter color that promotes productivity than a shade of blue is a great choice. If you’re trying to brighten the room in a way that promotes more energy, then a shade of yellow might be just what the doctor ordered. All in all, decide what’s important to you, the vibe you’re trying to create, and understand the data so you can make an informed decision on the choice that will suit your needs best.
Keeping up with current trends can be fun if you enjoy changing things up every year or two. However, for the rest of us, selecting a timeless color that works with your existing decor and furniture is a more appealing (and cost effective) option. There are enough workable color choices where you don’t need to go with trending hues to create a master suite addition that you'll love. Sure, there will be exceptions to this rule. If you enjoy painting, or you’re someone who likes to switch it up every couple of years then you can get away with trendy color schemes. However, not everyone loves rolling out the plastic carpet cover and paintbrushes.
There are plenty of pros and cons to painting a room white. In fact, white even falls in the trendy category at the moment. It probably goes against anything your mother has ever told you about interior design, but it’s definitely in right now. The pros of a white wall? The color does a great job of making the room feel larger, and it’s a great backdrop for wall art. It’s also a clean and simple look that will match pretty much anything you put in the room. And there are many other ways to add color to a room, through linens and upholstery, like in this example below (not one of our projects).
However, there are a few perceived cons to painting your bedroom white as well. The biggest thing to consider? The natural light and the climate. White rooms need natural light to brighten up the room and make it feel warmer. If the room your painting white doesn’t have a wealth of natural light then it can feel chilly. This is especially important in climates that experience all four seasons.
Lastly, if you think it’s going to look bad then it probably will. There are so many color combinations out there. You shouldn’t have to talk yourself into a certain color because of a blog you read, or someone told you it would look nice.
Ultimately, the master suite is your place for rest and relaxation. You should be excited about your color choice, plain and simple. If you’re feeling uneasy, take a step back, revisit your swatches and make a choice that makes sense for you and your partner.
